Description:
Providence: Carter and Wilkinson, 1798. Hardcover. See Description. Fifth Revision. 8vo. 652p. Bound in full period sheep with gilt spine label. Binding is sturdy and attractive but reveals the usual signs of rubbing, wear, spots of discoloration, etc. The tail cap of the spine and a couple small spots along the outer joint are carefully repaired/restored. Interior pages show some age toning, scattered foxing, and mild damp staining. Several leaves display crease marks. The inside front cover and front fly-leaf contain a name and date – "Peleg Almy’s book 1798." This is probably Peleg Almy (1761-1854) who was a resident of Rhode Island. This is the fifth revision of the Rhode Island laws. The first edition which appeared in 1719 was the earliest printed edition of Rhode Island law. [Sabin 70626].

Description:
1883 William Ewart Gladstone British Prime Minister England Slavery Thom Archer

William Ewart Gladstone was a highly influential 19th-century British politician who served as Prime Minister in the 1870s. Gladstone was an outspoken pro-slavery politician, opposing emancipation in any form. And while his stance on slavery doesn't resonate with 21st-century views, he was considered 'the People's William' for his commitment to low taxes and governmental reforms.

Description:
1778 Beccaria Crimes and Punishment TORTURE Death Penalty Law Thomas Jefferson
Cesare Beccaria was an 18th-century Italian jurist known for his studies in criminology at the height of the Age of Enlightenment. His best and most important book was 'On Crimes and Punishment' – one of the foundational books in criminology. Beccaria discusses the use of torture as a means of gaining information, and the death penalty in punishments for crimes, arguing strongly against both.
Beccaria's 'Crimes and Punishments'
was widely read throughout the western world and would become a favorite of both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. This 1778 English edition contains a curious commentary which, according to the title page, is attributed to Voltaire.

Quarter leather with raised bands over boards. 22 cm. 821, xviii pp. Spine worn; some writing, interior has stains on title page, else very good.
OCLC shows 89 holdings. Scarce today. Morrison, Nineteenth Century Texana, shows three listings. The Constitutional Convention of 1875 was the result of the determination of the Democrats of Texas to eliminate the reconstruction Constitution of 1869. The Democrats wanted to rewrite the constitution to reflect their own policies of white superiority and the right of the state to govern itself with little federal intervention. Of the 90 delegates, six were African American. Amidst the hostile anti-Republican atmosphere, African American delegates worked to prevent the loss of voting rights and public education. Ratified by voters in 1876, the constitution… Read More

1654 Godefroy Justinian LAW Commentary Codex Corpus Juris Civilis Byzantine
Jacques Godefroy, son of the famed Denis Godefroy, followed his father's lead by publishing his own edition of the ancient Roman 'Codex'. This manual was, as expected, a political commentary on the
Corpus Juris Civilis offering historical context for his views. While not as famous as the commentaries of his father, any law codex published by the Godefroy family is without question the most reputable of any such work.
