John Clark "Jack" Okey (June 3, 1889 - January 8, 1963) Was An American Art Director. He Was Raised In Los Angeles And Attended The Harvard School For Boys. After Leaving, He Was Given Instruction In Art By His Uncle, The California Artist, J. Bond Francisco. While He Was In His Early 20S, He Traveled To Paris With His Friend Stanton Macdonald Wright, And Spent Several Years There Studying Art. Around The Time Of His Marriage In 1913, He Became Involved In The Nascent Film Industry In The Los Angeles Area And Was Involved In The Design And Construction Of Some Of The Earliest Studios There. Thin strip of tissue-paper on the outside rear page, and minimal loss to this blank leaf near the centre of the hinge (both as a result of having been mounted in, then removed from, an album); light creases where folded in four for posting; in excellent condition. Humboldt writes to introduce the geologist Alexandre Brongniart, remembering with gratitude the assistance rendered by le Duc to himself and his friends and collaborators, [Louis Joseph] Gay-Lussac and [Christian Leopold von] Buch. He hopes that M. Brongniart, 'l'homme célèbre', who wishes to visit Vesuvius and the lava flows of Ischia, will be afforded similar kindnesses. 2005. Dated "March 5, 2005" with Palahniuk's agent's NYC return address. Aprx 150 words. Palahniuk returns signed books and informs his correspondent that in the furure the "address in Vacouver, Washington will be unreliable. I'm seldom there." He recommends St Helen's Bookstore for future signed books. "It's a small one-room bookstore and I stop there once a month... It's good to support small, independent bookstores." Palahniuk adds that he is glad to return the books. "It would bum-me-out to think they'd sat in the 'dead-letter' office, or -- like a ton of my mail -- got left in the rain... You wouldn't guess the sad, wet mountain of mail that gets hauled away from my old house in Portland." He ends with "I'll shut up now." Signed in ink. Fine condition.. Signed by Author. Unbound. 1972. Near Fine. A warm, gracious 2 pg. ALS from the photographer Paul Strand, referencing --among other things-- an evening with Hart Crane. Strand is patiently responding (from France) to a Vietnam vet (whose 2 letters are here included) who asks if he and his wife might work for an aging Strand in any capacity. Strand's August 1972 8 1/4" x 10 1/2" letter in response is bright and clean and has held up nicely. His hand is strong and the ball-point ink completely legible. Also includes the original enevelope (addressed in Strand's hand and postmarked "Yvesines", France).

Covers worn and scuffed, free endpapers lacking, joints tender, contents tanned and foxed, minor dampstaining to last pages,drawing and doodling on front pastedown, strip torn from lower margin of last page, no loss of text, former owner's name on title page. A very early edition of this title, by the author referred to by James Boswell as the "Prodigious Vendor of Literature.

Letter, 1990. Letter. Very Good. Unmarked. Signed letter from the artist Gordon Onslow Ford (1912-2003) to writer/artist Amy Ione in response to an article about his work. Folded into four panels. Includes comments on his view of art theories. British-born painter Gordon Onslow Ford was the youngest and last surviving member of the original Surrealist artistic group, led by the poet André Breton. Also included in the group were Matta, Joan Miro, Marcel Duchamp, Yves Tanguy, Jean Arp, and Salvador Dali.

Typed and handwritten signed letter to "My dear Watson" dated 5th January 1934. 1pp. 20cm x 25cm. King's College Zoological Department headed watermarked notepaper. The advance copy of the book mentioned is Huxley's "Elements of Experimental Embryology" co-written with Gavin de Beer. "I have got a German refugee working here who is getting interesting results with Sabella". The German refugee was Fabius Gross (1906 – 1950) Hitler's Black Book entry: "Since 1934 – Researcher at King's College, London University. Speciality – genetics; experimental cytology; protozoology; experimental zoology." Gross and Huxley published 'Regeneration and reorganisation in Sabella' in 1935. The letter also mentions work with Alexander Wolsky and C. J. Bond.

Handwritten note in pencil to verso: "Touting for signatures for candidature for Roy Soc". Nominated for candidature many times from the 1920's, and failing each time, it was not until 1938 that Huxley was eventually admitted as a Fellow. The tone of the… Read More

Pietro Bembo was a 15th-century Italian scholar known for his direct influence in the development of the Italian language and the revival of the works of Petrarch. As a man of letters, Bembo was well-acquainted with many political, religious, and literary leaders throughout Italy and Europe. Many of his letters were collected and published in the mid-16th-century and included dozens of letters including those of Erasmus of Rotterdam, Cosmo Gherio (Bishop of Fano), Andrea Alciato, Cardinal Reginald Pole, Alfonso II Duke of Ferrara, and many others.

It is impossible for me - since the printer is not in Paris - to rework my manuscript. Therefore be good enough to be satisfied with the Russian article; it is accurate, on the whole, and it would be difficult for me to redo a study on Bortnianski and Emperor of Russia's singers that is already done."
