Canadian writer's first novel, set during "the last year of the war and the first year of the peace," and the problems that are encountered by a young veteran "accustomed to regimentation and suddenly thrown on kis own resources to take his place in the way of life for which he had fought." 160 pages. Light edgewear, light rubbing, 1/2" separation to bottom right spine edge, 1/8" separation to bottom left spine edge, subsequent lifting of bottom spine, thin crease to bottom left corner of back cover, vertical creasing to back cover, moderate handling wear. Grey cloth over boards, title and author image stamped in gilt and maroon onto upper board, title stamped in gilt onto spine, 8vo (7-7/16 inches tall), pp. 317, all edges trimmed, top edge gilt, author portrait frontis, title page printed in black and red, 4 illustrations [5 inc. frontis]. Volume with cover illustration lightly rubbed, wear to spine ends, spine tilt, small 1/2" piece missing at bottom of one leaf. Page 15 has a few lines taken from a letter written in French - pertaining to the story - neatly translated into English underneath. First published in Russia in 1899 and later translated by William E. Smith, this was the last novel written by Tolstoy.

Joseph Jacobs was an Australian folklorist and writer of English literature. His work went on to popularize some of the world's best-known versions of English fairy tales including "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Goldilocks and the three bears", and "The Three Little Pigs". He published fairy tales collected from continental Europe as well as Jewish, Celtic and Indian Fairytales which made him one of the most popular writers of fairytales for the English language.
