Description:
1844 1st Charles Dickens Martin Chuzzlewit English Literature Satire Illustrated

"If I was a painter, and was to paint the American Eagle, how should I do it?"
– Charles Dickens, Martin Chuzzlewit
This rare first edition, first issue, was believed by Dickens to be his best work, though it was the least popular of his works. Dickens originally released the story in 20 monthly parts; however, upon realizing its failing popularity, he changed the plot to send the title character, Chuzzlewit, to America. Dickens sought to elaborate on his own views of selfishness in America, and, in doing so, created popularity within a lesser-known character.

Description:
1881 Jules Verne 1st ed 800 Leagues Amazon Jangada South America French Hetzel

Unlike many of Jules Verne's other novels, 'Eight Hundred Leagues on the Amazon' does not have any science fiction elements. The story takes place around Joam Garral and his family, who are forced to travel down-stream on the Amazon river using a giant timber raft before rushing to decode an encrypted letter to save Joam.

First Published in French in 1881 by Hetzel, this book was the 21st in the famed 'Voyages Extraordinares' series. While undated, this 1881 edition features the two elephants at the top corners of the front cover, indicative of earliest Verne editions.

Note on dating: like many other Verne first editions, the title page included was issued in each edition, including later printings. The dating comes from the ads in the back of the book – note the ads in this volume advertise for the releases in the 1881-1882 print year.

Description:
The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. 1952 Scribners, first edition, 140 pages. According to a review in the New York Times: "'The Old Man and the Sea' is a short novel, only 27,000 words. It is much simpler and enormously better than Mr. Hemingway's last book, 'Across the River and Into the Trees.' No phony glamour girls and no bullying braggarts sentimentalized almost to parody distort its honest and elemental theme. No outbursts of spite or false theatricalism impede the smooth rush of its narrative. Within the sharp restrictions imposed by the very nature of his story Mr. Hemingway has written with sure skill. Here is the master technician once more at the top of his form, doing superbly what he can do better than anyone else."
Points: Blue-tinted author photo on back jacket, no mention of prizes on the back flap, "A" and Scribners colophon on copyright page
