A very rare and fine set of 106 lithographed plates depicting the Swedish trailway buildings and trains. Sweden started building railways comparatively late. Sweden hesitated under heavy debate for several years because of the costs and other issues. Following the parliament's decision in 1854 a colonel of the Navy Mechanical Corps, Nils Ericson, was chosen as the leader for the project of building the main lines (stambanorna). His proposal was that the line between Gothenburg and Stockholm (Västra Stambanan) should run south of Lake Mälaren to avoid competition with shipping. (11 X 7.9 inches). 134pp. Illustrated with 16 fine albumen photographic prints of Locomotives, each mounted onto a card page with the technical details for that engine printed on the pages following each image, plus an engraved frontis of the Locomotive works building and several smaller wood engraved illustrations throughout the text. All pages with a printed red ruled border. Original brown pebble grained cloth on bevelled edges boards with gilt lettering to the front cover and spine. Blind stamped rule and decorative corner borders on both boards. There is a split to the cloth on about a third of the lower outer hinge, but the book is still tight and intact. Original dark brown coated endpapers. A crease to the front free endpaper and one page bumped to the outer corner of one mount page, not affecting the image and some minor rubbing and marking to the binding but overall a very good copy of this uncommon catalogue. ---… Read More
