Small losses to spine tips, chip to corner of back panel (1 cm triangle), short tear with associated creases to front panel. Book has very slight insect scarring to the compressed page edges and a few pages with creased corners (appear deliberate), small green dot on the back paste down and a slight bump to the top of the spine. It is dated Dec 9, 1896, and is in thanks from the Association for having accepted a proposal between the two societies. It is on Association letterhead. This letter is in English. Folio. 77 pp. written in ink in a fine cursive hand, each section underlined in red, in a ledger notebook of 141 numbered pages, with detailed specifications for all aspects of shipbuilding, from construction and trigging to engines and cabins, etc. In a homemade binding of thick canvas surrounding the original ledger, the canvas stretched across the boards with interlocking twine stitching. Front cover with the title in MS on the canvas, front pastedown and final blank bearing calligraphic inscriptions of the name of the first owner: "Captain M.J. Daly" Manuscript record of the detailed specifications for the construction of an iron ship (length: 247 ft., gross tonnage: 1, 607) to be delivered to Port Glasgow "on or before Oct. 20, 1891". U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, Washington, D.C., 1911; Large 26" x 32" map showing, on the landward side, from Malaga Cove in the west to Naples in the east, with points in between such as Rocky Point, Point Vicente, Portuguese Bend, San Pedro, Point Fermin, Smith’s Island, Wilmington, Bixby Slough, Long Beach, etc. On the seaward side shows depths in fathoms as far out as 8 nautical miles, with notations as to water colors, buoy locations, lights, etc. Published November, 1911, compiled from the 1870 to 1910 surveys. Stamped in the blank bottom margin, "Lights, Beacons, and Buoys Corrected For Information Received To July 17, 1912." Scale: 1:40,000. Printed on heavy paper. Rolled, not folded. M. de Freville was a teacher, who wrote a variety of works, including for children. This book is notable in that it gives one of the first accounts in French of Cook's 1st voyage in the Endeavour, 1768-71. The bindings have raised bands and gilt titles and dates to spines. They are in near fine condition. The endpapers are marbled in a near match for the original marbling on the page edges. New blanks have been inserted at front and rear. Vol I: half title (giving the alternative 'Hydrographie...as the title); title page with 2 ink signatures across the lower half (the ink is visible to verso); Preface v-xlviii; fold out map; text with decorative headpiece and tailpieces pp 1-518; Index 519-522; errata. The issues 1893-1915 are all bound with all the original printed wrappers (stating that they are off-prints) for every issue (except for the front wrapper for the first issue) in four near contemporary blue half cloth bindings with gilt titles and years to spine.
