20 x 26 cm quarto hardcover, contemporary marbled paper covered boards, vellum tips to corners, leather spine with gilt black leather title label, gilt compartments, xv, 217, [3], 30 plates, 19 of which are folding, 2 extending to 112 cm with multiple mounted leaves. Plate VII inscribed, "J.D. Coulet sculpsit a Toulouse les 30 planches," Plate IX: "J.D. Coulet Parisiens sculpsit." The plates are remarkably bold impressions on heavy paper. Covers clean with light wear, abrasion to leather of top spine compartment, light foxing to endpapers. Binding tight, text pages and plates are crisp and unmarked, a small ink hole in text leaves 119/120 and 127/128, browning to some page edges, water stain top corner of last pages. 1602 HERBAL Castore Durante Herbario Nuovo Plants Medicine Illustrated Mattioli

Castore Durante was a 16th-century Italian scholar who is best-remembered for his major work "Hebrario Nuovo". This work, which was first published in 1585, is a collection of descriptions of plants and their medical uses and healing properties. The plants detailed in this work were from Europe and the East and West Indies with information on how to identify them in their indigenous environment. According to Hunt,
"This was a popular Italian herbal that was reprinted in Italian, and translated and published in several other languages, for a number of years. The plant descriptions are written in the form of poems which Arber describes as 'pleasingly unscientific"

This highly coveted and desirable 1602 second edition is extremely valuable much in part to the hundreds of in-text woodcuts in the style of Mattioli.

Rubbed to spine ends and tips, joints slightly rubbed, minor spine lean, short crack to gutter of rear endpaper - not to joint. A well read copy, but the plates in fine condition, bright and fresh with unfoxed tissue guards. Binding firm, pages clean and unmarked, overall a sound copy.
