Rare first edition, this book is a compilation of lecture notes over a seventeen-year period used before non-medical women students of college age.Condition of the book is overall good. The outer cover shows some wear with fading mostly on the spine. On front cover there are a couple minor black ink marks. The inside front and back inside covers are stained from exposure to moisture. Starting around page 300 there is minor water damage in the upper right corners of the pages through the end of the book. Otherwise, this copy is in great condition. A key book from a fascinating moment in the history of the science of genetics. Weismann summerises and criticises the various current theories of inheritance - Darwin, Lamarck, Nagelli. Exposition of Weismann's germ plasm theory, somatic and germ cells, drawings of the stages of cell division showing what I think would be called chromosoms today - he calls them "loops". Diagrams of how these "loops" could be modified in inheritance. The 1866 work of Mendel was unknown at this time (1892) but repeated or rediscovered by de Vries later in the 1890's.
The two volumes are in very good condition. Pages of the second volume uncut.

The text is a little toned but generally clean. Illustrated with several black and white plates. Ignatz Leo Nascher (1863-1944) is widely know as the father of the study of Geriatrics in America. He originated the term "Geriatrics" in 1909 in an article. He argued that old age should be considered a separate field of study, and this book was the first American book on the subject. He had difficulty finding a publisher for the book, and indeed few copies turn up on the market. Hendrik van Deventer was the son of a leather merchant who moved to The Hague in 1653. He was apprenticed to a goldsmith. In 1678 he joined the followers of Jean de Labadie. Most likely spurred on by the doctor of the sect,the physician Walter, in whom he was apprenticed from the age of twenty, the former goldsmith's apprentice Hendrik also ended up with the sect members.
