Few natural wonders are as recognizable as the world's tallest mountain, Mount Everest. In the early 20th-century, numerous groups sought to become the first to reach the summit with British expeditions being the first to get close in the 1920s. The summit wasn't reached until 1953 by Edmund Hillary, but British reconnaissance expeditions and ascent attempts yielded important books on the history of climbing Mount Everest.
