Copenhagen: Gyldendal, 1921 A good copy of the scarce 1st edition in original cloth binding with black and white frontispiece and 8 further black and white plates by 'native Eskimo artists'. Knud Rasmussen is famous as an explorer of the Arctic, who grew up in Greenland and spent his life understanding and studying native life. The green cloth binding has gilt titles to spine and blind stamped titles to the front board. It has some light scuffing and edge wear; some pulling to spine ends; and corner wear including bumping to the top corners. Internally there is the bookplate of Cardiff Public Reference Library to the front pastedown endpaper. The bookplate and a small set of library numbers written on the verso of the title are the only library markings. The designs by Leonard Agostini (Leonardo Augustino), engraved by Giovanni Battista Galestruzzi, original descriptive Italian text by Giovanni Bellori, the noted Italian antiquary, translated into Latin by Jacob Groenhoven (Jacobo Gronovio).
Two parts bound in one with all 271 engraved plates: engraved portrait of Agostini as frontispiece, second engraved allegorical frontispiece depicting Romulus and Remus, 217 plates in Part I numbered 1-3 and 1-214, 51 plates in Part II numbered 1-51, title page and divisional half-title with engraved vignette present in each part.

An excellent copy of the first edition of Jones and Kropf's collection of Magyar folklore, along with analysis of the Magyars and their beliefs. A very good copy: pages are clean and unmarked with just some age wear here and there. No inscriptions. Not ex library. Covers are very good: just a few marks and age wear, and a little scuffing here and there. Spine has the slightest give but not cracking or hinge issues. Very nice. No DJ, as published.
