Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present images are an extraordinary pair of photographs, one from a near face-on p.o.v., the other from right profile, of a large group of Zulu tribesmen, in warrior regalia, seated and watching a motion picture (in the first of the images the 16mm projector is visible in the background). Great image of a cowboy and his horse paying his respects at a grave on the range. Original Smith images with his stamp are uncommon on the market. "Growing up in Bonham, Texas, Erwin Smith knew he wanted to be a cowboy and an artist. The era of great trail drives was ending, and he was determined to document the open-range lifestyle before it disappeared completely. Smith gained experience by working on ranches and studying painting and sculpting at art schools in Chicago and Boston before he realized that the photographs he used as preliminary studies were works of art themselves. Spain, 1947. No Binding. Good. A remarkable original Spanish Press Photograph of the deceased Manolete possibly just before his funeral. Printed on photographic paper with a gloss finish to the image. To the verso are various stamps and a newspaper cutting. The earliest visible stamp is dated Sept 17th, 1947. The (landscape) photo measures approx 23 x 17 cm, or 9 x 7 inches. In Good overall condition, the image is lightly tanned and there is wrinkling and handling creases evident. There are some marks/stains at the verso. For best appreciation of condition please study the accompanying image which is high resolution. A remarkable historical image

Lange took this image while working for the Resettlement Administration and the Farm Security Administration (two WPA agencies). The most famous image from this period in her career is Migrant Mother, the iconic Depression-era photograph. Lange's images from this era often have descriptive names rather than titles, and they have changed over time. This one is called "Cotton Sharecroppers"... on the Library of Congress website; "Greene County, Georgia" is written in pencil on the back (verso) of this photograph.
