Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1972 A volume of poetry. One of just 500 copies that Arkham printed (and which sold out very quickly). This copy was signed (not inscribed) by the author. There are no remainder marks, no price-clipping, no bumped edges. However, there is soiling to the front and rear of the jacket. Overall, a nice copy of a scarce title. Comes in a Brodart protective cover. All books are bubble-wrapped and placed in a sturdy shipping box when mailed.

Martial was a 1st-century Roman poet from Spain most-known for his 'Epigrams.' This important, early piece of Roman literature expresses details of life in Rome focusing in on the brutal daily life during the Roman Empire. Martial describes living conditions of Rome, corrupt physicians and senators, cruel treatment of slaves, and secrets and rumors of emperors. Because of the style of Martial's writing, he is often considered the first insult comic, as he used humor to disguise his disdain for the life with which he was so familiar.

Original quarter white parchment over grey paper covered boards, five raised bands and title at spine printed in blue, Very Good, spine browned and with two small stains, joints starting to open yet still holding well, corners rubbed, end pages toned, prior owner gift inscription in pencil front end page. The poem "In Helena's Garden" by Richard Watson Gilder pasted onto recto of 2nd front end page, laid in at rear the poem "O Music" by Harriet Prescott Spofford from a contemporary magazine. . All uniformly bound in attractive fine early leather bindings of full red straight grained morocco. Spines with four raised bands, each with gilt ruling. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Gilt decorative borders on boards, with four blind stamped ruled lines inside the panel. Turn-ins with floral gilt roll. Board edges with gilt tooling to corners. All edges gilt. Neat previous owner bookplates on front paste downs. One gathering slightly sprung in volume one. Some light spotting to a few pages in each volume, but generally a clean set. Spine of volume three is a bit faded and worn and a bit of rubbing to the extremities of the other volumes but overall a very good and beautifully bound set.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: George William Russell (10 April 1867 - 17 July 1935) who wrote with the pseudonym Æ (often written AE or A.E.), was an Irish writer, editor, critic, poet, painter and Irish nationalist. He was also a writer on mysticism, and a central figure in the group of devotees of theosophy which met in Dublin for many years.

This scarce offprint was issued to correct the mis-printings to the text of the article that had just appeared in the first issue of the magazine "transition." (Wilson A10). Stein insisted on the printing of this supplementary pamphlet, but only enough copies to supply subscribers were printed; these were laid-in to copies of the first printing of the magazine issue.
