1692 1ed Sappho & Anacreon Classical GREEK Erotic Poetry Longepierre French
A rare, late 17th-century printing of the poetry of ancient Greek writers Sappho and Anacreon.
Known for her lyric poetry written on the island of Lesbos, Sappho has few surviving works which were thought to be written to be sung. Similarly, the works of 5th-century BC poet Anacreon were notable ancient songs. This collection of erotic poems was edited and translated by Hilaire-Bernard Longepierre who included a 'life of Sappho' in this 1692 edition.

1886 Lenore EDGAR ALLAN POE Illustrated Poetry MACABRE Gothic Romance Macabre

Edgar Allan Poe's poem "Lenore" explores the aftermath of a young woman's death through the perspective of her fiancé, Guy de Vere, who celebrates her ascension to the afterlife, a departure from Poe's typical themes of melancholy surrounding the loss of women. This work suggests the possibility of reunion in the afterlife, a recurring motif in Poe's writings. Some speculate that "Lenore" reflects Poe's personal emotions related to his wife's illness or serves as an ode to his late brother, William Henry Leonard Poe.

This edition includes by 15 engravings crafted by the talented Canadian artist, Henry Sandham.

Description:
1870 The Vision of Dante Alighieri HELL Purgatory Paradise DIVINE COMEDY Cary

"The Vision; or, Hell, Purgatory, & Paradise of Dante Alighieri," translated by Rev. Henry Francis Cary, is the English version of Dante's "The Divine Comedy." This epic poem explores the soul's journey to God through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, guided by the figures of Virgil, Beatrice, and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, representing reason, divine grace, and mysticism, respectively. Originally written in Tuscan dialect, which shaped modern Italian, the three-part poem combines allegory with realism. Cary's translation captures the essence of Dante's narrative that intertwines spiritual redemption with literary innovation.

Published in New York by Hurst and Co., this rare, scarcely printed 19th-century edition of Dante's iconic work is enriched by Cary's scholarly commentary, a chronology of Dante's life, and additional notes. Beautifully bound in decorative blue cloth, it is illustrated with 24 stunning engraved plates.… Read More
