A fine, late 19th-century lot of English poetry of Jean Ingelow, Alexander Pope, and Edmund Spenser.
Edmund Spenser is one of the most well-known 16th-century English poets. His most-famous poem, 'The Faerie Queene' is one of fantasy and allegory that celebrated the Tudors and Queen Elizabeth. Alexander Pope was one the most famous and best English poets of all time, who should be included with Shakespeare as the highest regarded English literary figures. Together they produced the most iconic works of English literature outside of Shakespeare.

Originally written in 1575, Torquato Tasso's famous "Jerusalem Delivered" tells a mythical story of the First Crusade complete with Christian Knights battling Muslim warriors. This 1668 Italian edition was published in Venice by Zaccaria Conzatti. It also features commentary and extended cantos by Camillo Camilli, as well as a life of Tasso by Lorenzo Crasso.

1677 RARE Fons Lachrymarum by Royalist John Quarles English Civil War Poems

John Quarles, son of the notable 16th-century English emblemist, became well-known Royalist poet best remembered for his epic poem "Fons Lachrymarum". This collection of poems was written during his time in exile – banished from England to Flanders for his role in the English Civil War. The poems exhibit themes of meditation, complaints, and lament during a time of great unrest in England. Much of this work was based on the Old Testament book of Lamentations of Jeremiah and includes an elegy on Royalist Charles Lucas and his time as a prisoner during the civil wars.

1660 Puritan 1ed Iter Boreale by Robert Wild England Restoration George MONCK

Robert Wild was a 17th-century English Puritan poet best remembered for his poem 'Iter Boreale'. This poem, along with many of his others, were quite popular during his time, much in part to the more scandalous nature of his works which did not align with his Puritan values.

This particular 1660 first edition of Wild's "Iter Boreale" is notable for being dedicated to George Monck. Monck was the first Duke of Albermarle who was a pivotal figure in the restoration of Charles II as the King of England. Publisher George Thomason published this edition immediately following the restoration of the king, honoring Monck in the process.

Luis de Camões was a 16th-century Portuguese poet best known for his work 'Os Lusiadas'. This poem focuses on Portuguese voyages and discoveries of the 15th- and 16th-centuries. Later editions, particularly English editions, were known to feature critical attacks on Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and many of the economical patterns of Renaissance trade.
