Pieter Harting was 19th-century Dutch scientist who is best remembered for his contributions to the development and use of the microscope and microscopy. He published what proved to be the greatest book on microscopy, titled simple 'The Microscope', which provided lessons on using the microscope as well as covering designs for lens improvements.
It should be noted that Harting was one of the earliest supporters of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theories, many of which were endorsed by Harting's microscope findings. In fact, according to Darwin scholar Eve-Marie Engels, Harting was "one of the most influential" of all 19th-century scientists and philosophers.
This 1848 Dutch edition of 'The Microscope' is illustrated with 18 impressive folding engravings featuring numerous figures depicting microscope parts, lenses, cells, burners, and scalpels.

They reveal the intricate web of evidence drawn from geology, paleontology, anthropology, and the geographical distribution of species. Illustrated with several hundred graphs and small text figures, thick octavo, pp (ii), 1116, slightly used internally, the last 150 pages have a faint fold mark but not serious, a duplicate from East Malling Research Station with a stamp on the front endpaper and a shelf number on the spine, red cloth a little rubbed and the spine head a little torn; more serious is the fact that the half-title, the frontispiece and the title page have presumably come loose at some time and have been re-inserted using sellotape which is now browned (see illustration).
