1848 1ed Pieter Harting Microscope DUTCH Biology DARWIN Influence Illustrated 3v
Pieter Harting was 19th-century Dutch scientist who is best remembered for his contributions to the development and use of the microscope and microscopy. He published what proved to be the greatest book on microscopy, titled simple 'The Microscope', which provided lessons on using the microscope as well as covering designs for lens improvements.
It should be noted that Harting was one of the earliest supporters of Charles Darwin's evolutionary theories, many of which were endorsed by Harting's microscope findings. In fact, according to Darwin scholar Eve-Marie Engels, Harting was "one of the most influential" of all 19th-century scientists and philosophers.
This 1848 Dutch edition of 'The Microscope' is illustrated with 18 impressive folding engravings featuring numerous figures depicting microscope parts, lenses, cells, burners, and scalpels.

1898 1ed Clara Barton Red Cross Nursing Civil War Medicine Texas Illustrated

"You must never so much think as whether you like it or not, whether it is bearable or not; you must never think of anything except the need, and how to meet it."
– Clara Barton

Clara Barton spent much of her life helping people. She taught and helped care for soldiers on the battlefield during the Civil War, earning the name "Angel of the Battlefield." After going to Europe and learning about an organization there called the Red Cross, she decided to start one in America. As founder of the American Red Cross, which helps victims of natural disasters as well as war, Clara Barton sealed her place in history.

This 1898 first edition of "The Red Cross" catalogues the history of the American Red Cross and is thoroughly expanded from the 1883 edition. It contains new information not in previous iterations and examines relief work in the Civil War, Texas famines, Michigan forest fires, the Spanish-American War, and many… Read More

Cambridge at the University Press, 1942. [A New Edition, 1942]. Illustrated with several hundred graphs and small text figures, thick octavo, pp (ii), 1116, slightly used internally, the last 150 pages have a faint fold mark but not serious, a duplicate from East Malling Research Station with a stamp on the front endpaper and a shelf number on the spine, red cloth a little rubbed and the spine head a little torn; more serious is the fact that the half-title, the frontispiece and the title page have presumably come loose at some time and have been re-inserted using sellotape which is now browned (see illustration). The first edition of 1917 is rare, and this much extended revision not much less so. Later printings are nearly always of the abridged edition. VERY SCARCE. [The first edition has often been seen as the founding statement of an agenda for an analysis of biological phenomena in mathematical terms. Despite obscurities and stylistic idiosyncrasies, it is still referred to in the present age… Read More
