1817 CHINA Voyages of Macartney Macao Hong Kong Emperor Fou-hi MAP of ASIA India

In the first part of the 19th-century, stories and tales of famous voyages were popular throughout the western world – tales of Captain Cook, Columbus, African voyages, and the East India Company occupied readers from all over. Perhaps the best source of these accounts was 'Bibliotheque Portative des Voyages' – an enormous collection of voyage and exploration accounts.

This atlas tome from the 1817 first edition contains views of the voyages of Macartney in China. It should be mentioned that this volume contains 20 impressive illustrations including a folding map of Europe and southern Asia! Other illustrations include a portrait of Lord Macartney, Chinese bridges and boats, legend of Emperor Fou-hi (Fuxi), Chinese fishermen, Grotto of Camoens in Macao, and many others.

Description:
1846 Chippewa INDIANS 1ed Thomas McKenney Memoirs Cherokee POCAHONTAS Portrait

Thomas McKenney's "Memoirs" is one of the best mid-19th-century accounts of travels among Native American Indians! Published in 1846, "Memoirs Official and Personal" describes McKenney's adventures on the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers, interactions with the Winnebagoes, living among the Cherokee and Creek peoples, and his attempts at improving the living conditions of Indians through political persuasion. Note that this first edition contains numerous full-page engravings including the highly coveted, hand-colored illustration of Pocahontas!

Larned's perspective on this book is important:
"McKenney was appointed superintendent of the US trade with the Indian tribes…. He had great faith in the fundamental worth of the Indian, and has much to say in regard to the 'abominable abuse of power' of the government with the Indians. In 1826 he made an extensive trip in order to negotiate a treaty with the Chippewa Indians."… Read More

Taylor and Holub's "Africa Illustrated" is a large book filled with photographs and sketches of life in Africa. Each page of this work includes photogravure-like illustrations with captions under each.

1731 King Mouley Ismael MOROCCO PIRATES Slaves & Slavery Janissaries Busnot RARE

Dominique Busnot was an 18th-century French historian who, after traveling to Morocco numerous times, wrote what became his most famous and important work – "History of Mouley Ismael, King of Morocco". Mouley Ismael served as king for nearly fifty years and is remembered for expanding Moroccan territory through military strength and diplomacy with European powers. Busnot describes Mouley's reign as bloodthirsty, having taken French Christians as prisoner by Moroccan pirates. Having spent many years in Morocco negotiating with Moroccan leaders for the release of these prisoners, Busnot wrote this work to convince readers to help financially with the efforts to free the Christian prisoners from Morocco.

This 1731 edition of Busnot's most famous work was published in Rouen by Pierre Machuse and includes Busnot position on the church's tradition of pardoning slaves.
