Walter Muir Whitehill, Jr (1905 - 1978) was an American historian, writer and the director of the Boston Athenaeum for almost 30 years. Whitehill earned degrees from Harvard in 1926 and 1929, where he would later teach for 21 years. Whitehill spent five years in Spain studying Spanish Medieval history, architecture and art. In 1932 when this book is inscribed with his name and dated, Whitehill was in Santiago de Compostela Spain where he was the first to transcribe the medieval Codex Calixtinus. Whitehill was also a trustee of Monticello. His wife was a descendant of Thomas Jefferson, and they are buried in the family graveyard there.
