End papers are renewed with quality laid paper after period style. Interior is clean. An inscription written in an old hand on a front blank leaf reads: "Ex domo Authoris Maii 4. 1677" (From the house of the author, May 4. 1677). William Owtram (1625-1679) was an English conformist theologian known for his great skill in rabbinical learning. In 1669 Owtram became Archdeacon of Leicester and in 1670 he was made Prebendary of Westminster (1670). Richard Baxter spoke of him as " one of the best and ablest of the conformists." [DNB]. Occasional faint miniscule underlining in an old hand and a couple short marginal notations; some marginal smudging / soiling; front and rear blank leaves are ragged and torn. Volume I: tiny hole in p. 271 (mostly between lines but partly obstructing a couple of letters); bottom corner tip clipped on p.399 - not effecting text; pages 400-401 are dusty / soiled. Richard Bentley (1662-1742) English scholar and literary critic. He was made keeper of the Royal Libraries and was later appointed Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. Condition of the casing is Good- (minus): considerable wear, abbreviated title inked on spine label. Condition of the text is Good: occasional light soiling/foxing or marginal chip/closed tear; text rippled from aging. Quarto. 180mm x 140mm. Engraved title page, chipped and browned at edges. Typographic title page. Lacks paste-down and end pages. [18],128, 123-451, 451-452, [17]pp. 1 large folding table inserted. No rear end-pages. Pages are very good with some dog ears and browning at extremities. Full contemporary C17th boards recently rebacked in style with raised bands and label.

"The Second edition, with the addition of many physical herbs and their vertues". 12mo (measures 165mm x 105mm), pp (6), 349, (29) (though errors in pagination mean that there are actually 411 pages of main text), slightly used and marked throughout, contemporary panelled calf, dull and cracke but very sound, early repairs to the corners, fairly recently rebacked with new calf spine, raised bands and title label. (8 3/8 x 5 7/8"). 4 p.l., 64 pp. Macdonald 87b; Wing D-2265; ESTC R16601. ◆Binding with light scuffing and soiling, one vellum corner abraided and a small bump to fore edge; title a little soiled and with two small tears (no text affected), margins trimmed close (running titles occasionally grazed), paper very lightly toned and with the odd small ink stain or other minor blemish, but only a trace of foxing to final few leaves, and on the whole a very nice copy of this play, based on events from the reign of Henry III and briefly banned "because its presentation of French history was too palpably a parallel with contemporary events." A rare edition of 'A Collection of Articles... of the Church of England'. Collected by Anthony Sparrow, this work includes writings to and from the Church of England, injunctions of Queen Elizabeth, King James, and Edward VI. This collection of works describes various orders of the church, records of ceremonies, and doctrines of theology.

This particular 1699 edition includes supplements to Sparrow's earlier editions as well as a proclamation by King William II.

A rare printing of 'The Satires'
of Juvenal and Persius. This collection of satirical poetry was written in the late 1st and 2nd centuries and discuss society, social norms, irony, each of these providing insight to the morals and values of Roman life at the time. Juvenal outlines many of the concerns he has with Roman citizens including unfaithfulness and greed; issues he recognized as downfalls to society. Many of the satires include references to Greek and Roman mythology.
This 1642 Latin edition was edited and translated by Thomas Farnaby.
