Very Good Plus, clean, crisp, bright, binding tight, sound, and square, corners sharp, no ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind, in a bright Very Good dust jacket that has miniscule chipping at the topmost edge of the spine panel and a 3/8" closed edge tear at the upper left corner of the back panel. Sepia frontispiece on glossy stock. This book has no imprimatur. Francis J. Finn, (1859 - 1928) was an American priest who also wrote more than two dozen young adult novels. Reverend Finn was ordained in 1891, the same year as this book was published. Spine and top are darkened, name on fep, tanned margins on either side of front cover and some rubbing and light soil to covers; spine is slightly cocked. New York: William Morrow & Company, 1956. First edition. 8vo, 254pp. Publisher's pink cloth with black decoration and lettering in in jacket with illustration by Beth and Joe Krush. Very good, slightly cocked with some light soiling and bumping to edge of rear board and corners. Jacket has shallow chipping at spine ends and corners, rubbing along folds, and wrinkling to rear panel. Original price of $2.75 intact. Cleary's scarce 7th book for juveniles, published the year after Beezus and Ramona. The fact this novel, with its period themes of innocent adolescent romance, is still in print today is a testament to the relatability of Cleary's young characters through universal feelings and emotions.

One of the truly great coming-of-age stories, and a difficult book to find in the first edition (so stated on verso of title page; no later printings listed). This copy is signed by Alexander on the half-title. The book has some foxing on the top edge, and two small ink marks on the bottom of the page block (probably from a used bookstore, possibly from remaindering). The jacket has small closed tears on the edges, and one major flaw: someone removed, quite sloppily, a sticker (Caldecott honor sticker, I'm guessing) from the upper right front cover.
